Quilian Riano, and Dk Osseo-Asare: A City in Search of Good Fortune



Map of Buenaventura
The city of Buenaventura is in the Colombian state (departamento) of Valle del Cauca; the population is 350,000, with a density of 150 inhabitants per square mile (52 inhabitants per square kilometer). Most of the urban area is located on Cascajal Island, at its western edge. Eighty-five percent of the population is of African descent and the rest are descendants of European settlers or indigenous tribes.

Architects Quilian Riano and Dk Osseo-Asare report on the profitable but notorious port of Buenaventura, Colombia, as the city battles drug traffickers and paramilitary gangs, poverty and corruption; and they fear that the proposed solutions might be part of the problem.

Quilian Riano is a designer, writer and editor based in Cambridge, Massachusetts; he is working on design and research projects in Europe and the Americas with DSGN AGNC (co-founded with Dk Osseo-Asare), with colleagues at Harvard University, and with Estudio Teddy Cruz.
