Dorothy Tang & Andrew Watkins: Ecologies of Gold: The Past and Future Mining Landscapes of Johannesburg

Today approximately 1.6 million people — 25 percent of the population — in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni live in informal settlements throughout the metropolitan region. Of this number approximately 400,000 people live in informal settlements in the mining belt that traverses the two municipalities.
