Architizer: China Portfolio: From the Linked Hybrid to the Bug Dome

Macao Science Center
Pei Partnership Architects LLP

A futuristic intervention into an arts and education facility on the Pearl River Delta near Hong Kong, Pei's Macao Science Center was dedicated in 2009 on the 10th anniversary of the Portugese colony's return to Chinese sovereignty. Though the building includes multiple programs of study (interactive exhibition galleries, seminar rooms), the highlight is the 150-seat planetarium with a hemispherical screen and an outdoor observation deck with 360-degree views onto the water and city. Clad in shimmering aluminum, which makes it reflect its surroundings, the center is a play of geometric volumes — a rhomboid, a dome and a tilted cone.
