UT Austin to Host Curtains, an Exploration of Fabrics in Design

The Center for American Architecture and Design at The University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture will be hosting a multi-faceted project, Curtains, from October 14 to 18.

Curtains is a publication, installation, and exhibition event exploring the possibilities of fabric in architecture both at the scale of rooms and interiors as well as at the scale of the street and the city.

Curtains will explore the use of textiles and fabrics deployed not as rigid “tensile structures” but in their more relaxed, natural form: covering openings, making movable walls indoors and out, billowing overhead as canopies, catching and using wind as sails, creating shade, holding light in their folds, filtering views, absorbing sound, showing wind, and making theater of the everyday.

Competition winners, drawings, videos, and installations will be displayed in and around Goldsmith Hall at the University of Texas. A larger selection of the proposals received will be published in the 19th volume of the award-winning book series CENTER: Architecture and Design in America as well as exhibited at the Mebane Gallery of Goldsmith Hall on the University of Texas campus entitled "Curtains." The launch of CENTER 19: Curtains and the opening of the Curtains exhibition, with an address by Petra Blaisse, will take place on October 18.

For more information, contact Leora Visotzky at 512.471.9890, email caad@austin.utexas.edu or visit the web site: http://www.soa.utexas.edu/caad/curtains/index.html
