Out of Water Conference at University of Toronto

The University of Toronto presents the conference Out of Water: Sustaining Development in Arid Climates, hosted by the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design.

Friday and Saturday, April 1 – 2, 2011
9:00 am – 5:30 pm

John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design
230 College Street | Auditorium, Room 103
Toronto, Ontario

Open to the public. Advance registration encouraged: $5 for University of Toronto faculty and students, $20 for others.

The conference, organized by professors Liat Margolis and Aziza Chaouni, will offer a forum for water experts in the fields of design, engineering, natural and social sciences to identify specific disciplinary methodologies and areas of applied and theoretical intersections with respect to water scarcity in arid regions. These investigations will be discussed in the context of varying technical and sociopolitical dimensions of water scarcity.

Twenty-two established and emergent designers, scholars and scientists will discuss 'water technologies' within specific hydro-political contexts and evaluate currently-implemented solutions. Disciplines represented at the conference include environmental law and water policy, public health, agronomy, hydrology, building science, geography, business strategies, civil engineering, landscape architecture, architecture and urban design.

Keynote lectures by Antoine Picon, Professor of the History of Architecture and Technology, and Alon Tal, Professor of Environmental Policy and Law, will address the relationship between water, technology and society.

Additional speakers include Eilon Adar, Hadley Arnold, Kai Babetzki, Camille Dow Baker, Felipe Correa, Farid Esmaeil, Walter H. Kehm, Ted Kesik, Gini Lee, Virginie Picon-Lefebvre, Robert Levit, Mary Lou Lobsinger, Kristin Malone, Fadi Masoud, Alissa North, Dov Pasternak, Matthias Schuler, Byron Stigge, Alan Travers, Anthony M. Watanabe, James L. Wescoat, Jr., Drew Wensley, Jane Wolff, Lennart Woltering and Robert Wright.
