The Julius Shulman Institute at Woodbury University will present Catherine Opie: In & Around L.A. at Woodbury University Hollywood Gallery, February 16 – March 24, 2013. The show highlights Opie’s ongoing fascination with architecture and urbanism as subject. Opie is the 2013 recipient of the Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award, which will be presented at a public reception on March 2.

“Opie fulfills the Julius Shulman Institute’s mission of challenging the way we think about the representation of the physical world around us,” said JSI Director Emily Bills. “We are excited to celebrate the work of an L.A.‐based photographer who, since the release of her Freeway series in 1994, has developed a body of work that looks closely at the less‐represented parts of Los Angeles.”

For over 25 years, Opie has photographed people, places and buildings in and around Los Angeles. Her lens captures Bel Air facades decorated with intricate iron gates, West Adams shopkeepers with direct gazes, and undersides of overpasses. Taken as a whole, these works create a portrait of Los Angeles as a singular built environment. Opie’s work is characterized by formal rigor and exquisite prints, yet she maintains a commitment to the social function of photography — its power to comment on and transform everyday life. Opie’s series “Shopkeepers,” one of five that will be featured in this exhibit, documents small businesses in her West Adams neighborhood, and was recently featured in the PBS series Art21.

The exhibit and reception will be at WUHO Gallery, 6518 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles. Gallery hours are Thursday, 1 – 8 pm, and Friday to Sunday, 1 – 6 pm.

The Woodbury School of Architecture is one of Places’ partner schools.
